LEDDING LIBRARY
MILWAUKIE, OR
Situated along the lush greenery of the previously underutilized Scott Park, the Ledding Library blurs the line between building and landscape. The previous building, while beloved to the community, had fallen prey to the passing of time and was found to be beyond saving.
We took cues from the adjacent Spring Creek in creating an undulating, rolling building mass, allowing each bend in the stream to inform interior geometries. Natural clearings between old-growth oaks carved sightlines and vistas. Tree canopies gave way to sloping ceilings, giving height in central areas and compression of scale in intimate ones. The use of warm, natural materials mixed with vibrant colors is itself resultant of the landscape within the park, their levels of saturation varying based on spatial program. The cohesion of open library space throughout creating a strong connection between children and adults, shelter and nature, lending an air of whimsy to the library as a whole.
