HOFFMAN CONSTRUCTION HQ
LAKE OSWEGO, OR
To consider Hoffman Construction Company’s breadth of work is an exercise in scale. To consider a headquarters and workplace befitting of their prolific portfolio, we started big. This project began by considering the interior environment as urban planning on a micro scale, prioritizing user experience, thoughtful amenities, and simple yet beautiful architecture.
Five key design elements inspired by urban typologies were identified to create spatial hierarchy, aid in wayfinding, and guide the use of materiality. At the heart of the floor plate, the High Rise (shown as wood) pulls inspiration from skyscraper facades and exposed framing to create a dynamic spatial backdrop to the open office space. The Boulevard is a central east/west circulation spine that provides uninterrupted sightlines and a sense of direction. Three Alleys (per floor) are immersive north/west passageways that are subtly angled to force perspective and frame views. The Park Blocks (shown in green) are social hubs with outdoor topologies and greenery; a nod to their former proximity to the Park Blocks in downtown Portland. Finally, glassy Infill blocks (shown in grey) provide spatial buffers and a material counterpoint to the wood paneling nearby.
Above all else, we wanted to make sure that every detail, every finish, and every space oozed “Hoffman” without being cliche or heavily branded. From subtle uses of the “H” logo, to referencing construction details in unexpected ways (ie. the suspended rebar stair), we wanted to make sure that every employee and visitor knew what Hoffman is all about; precision, innovation, and craft.
